Starting tomorrow the GMS Green team is promoting Waste Free Wednesdays.

Q: So what can I bring for my lunch?

A: Anything! Just remember the 3 Rs when packing your lunch. . . .Reuse, Refill and Recycle.

Bring reusable Tupperware for your food and a refillable container for your drink Recycle any packaging that comes with your food.

Q: What about Mommy’s Yummies?

A: He’ll recycle that for us. Just have your Mummies Yummies rep bring all the Mummy’s yummies containers back to the main lobby at 12:45.

Q: What about my waste?

A: Try not to have any! But if you do, just bring it home in your lunch bag on Wednesday to keep your homeroom waste free!

The classes that have no garbage will get really cool prizes.

As a result of a technical difficulty with our central report card system, Term 1 report cards will be sent home on February 10th, 2012 across the district. Canspell Competition

The final for the 2012 Canspell was held Thursday Jan 26. It took us 10 rounds to determine Greenbank's best speller, who will go on to compete at the city level. Two difficult rounds left us with still 5 contestants and the prospect for a long overtime, but all of sudden, spellers made a mistake all at the same time, leaving Georgie from 8K the school winner.

Some of the words would probably have given many adults some problems, but students were all right in spelling polyglot, hexameter, muscular, miscible, akimbo, perseverance, resuscitable and many others. Congratulations to all finalists:
Drake 8E, Janet 8D, Ivy W 7H, Alexa 7A, Rachel 8B, Andy 8C, Abdou 8F, Michael 7K, Spencer 7B, Ivy M 7E, Mitchell 8G, Naomi 8A, Nabil 7C, Cameron 7G, Jeffrey 7D and Abdillahi 8H. We would also like to congratulate the runner ups in the each class who were ready to stand in for their class and are thus also considered 2012 Canpsell finalists: Isaac 7A, Jeffrey 7B, Eddie and Lauren 7C, Gillian 7D, Safa 7E, Afra 7G (actual winner but absent for the final), Taliya 7H, Adam 8A, Grand 8B, Prima 8C, Dario 8D, Susanna 8F and Andy 8H.

Planet Dance Workshops

Greenbank Middle school is thrilled to be working with Hip Hop dancers from Planet Dance. They will be offering our Grade 7/8 and Grade 8 students 2- 50 minute lessons for only $4.00 per student.

Starting the week of Monday January 30th- Friday February 10th, students will participate in workshops during their regular drama period.

Students need to bring in their $4.00 in a sealed envelope with their name and class carefully labeled on the front as soon as possible to Ms Ferris.

GMS has sent home an information notice with all students today regarding an incident in the community that the Ottawa Police Service is currently investigating. As a precaution, please take a moment to review the suggestions below with your children.

Middle School students are reminded to:

· Travel with at least one other person whenever possible

· Keep valuables and technology out of site as much as possible when in public places

· Be aware of suspicious behaviour and try to remember any details so they can report it to parents or the police if necessary (plate numbers can be written in the dirt or snow if nothing else is available)

- Keep their radar up. Watch, listen and trust their instincts.

· Use a consistent route for walking home with a friend

This could include such things as photos of grandparents who served in WW11 or Korea, parents who have served in Afghanistan or on other military missions. It could include parts of uniforms, badges and medals, photos during time served, etc. The display case is locked at all times and your treasured items will be returned in the condition in which they are received. Cross Country Results

The Greenbank Cross-Country team had an excellent season this year. 75 athletes competed in the Regional Cross-Country Championships with 8 runners finishing in the top 20 for their respective races. Our 13 year old boys team placed third and qualified for the Board Championships. We took 21 athletes to the Board Championships. Kiana Gibson placed 6th out of 125 runners and Haider Alnakeb placed 9th out of 129 runners. Mr. Behn and Mr. Boucher are incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication and excellent behaviour demonstrated by all our athletes. Well done Gators!

Boys Football Results

The Waddell air show took flight yesterday at the Boys' Touch football tournament at Longfield Davidson Heights High School. The Greenbank Green Machine quarterbacked by Scott, featured a strike crew of Justin, Max, Ryan, Tyler, Moh, Sam and Abdi on the outside. Calling plays from his own playbook, Scott brought the Green Machine back against Broadview on the final play of the game to tie. Not to be outdone, Enes’s Army of defenders featuring Dakota, Amr, Aman, brothers Errol and Romeo, the crazy corners of Graham and Kyle and the spearhead of Neo on the rush, slammed shut Fisher Park and Moodie in two convincing shutouts.

Sitting in first place, the Gators found themselves almost too comfortable, as Cedarview Middle School threw everything they had at Greenbank. Despite a last minute touchdown, the Gators stalled, allowing Cedarview to take over first place.

The second place standing in their division sent Scott and Crew against Longfield Davidson Heights for the semi-finals. Despite driving rain, cold winds, injuries and exhaustion, the Green Machine went into half time down by only one point. Shivering and hobbled, the Gators fell just short of repeating as Division champs, losing to LDH in the final two drives of the game.

Mr. Simpson and Mr. Van Belois would like to thank the players for their dedication, hardwork, and love of the game. You made us proud.

GMS Reorganization Information

Due to lower than expected enrollment in the regular English program at GMS, we will be reorganizing to reduce one class. While every effort has been made to minimize the impact on students, it will require changes to some class and teacher timetables. Details will be outlined in a letter that will be sent home with students on Monday October 3rd.

Increased Mumps Activity in Ottawa

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is notifying you of a recent increase of mumps activity in Ottawa, which is linked to a provincial outbreak. To date, two cases of mumps have been reported in Ottawa and 31 cases have been reported in Ontario.

Mumps is an acute viral infection that can be transmitted from person-to-person through direct contact with respiratory droplets from the mouth or nose of an infected person. Complications of mumps can be very serious, including meningitis, swelling of the reproductive organs that can lead to sterility, and deafness.

The two cases of mumps in Ottawa have been in school-age children. Therefore, OPH is asking principals and teachers to be aware of the symptoms that a person with mumps may exhibit. Typically, mumps is characterized by fever, swelling and tenderness of glands in the mouth or neck (parotitis). Mumps should be suspected in a person who has these symptoms if there is no other apparent cause, even if he/she is fully vaccinated.

A person with mumps can spread the infection from seven days before to five days after the onset of parotitis. It can take from 14 to 25 days from the time of exposure for a person to develop the symptoms of mumps.

Consultation on Special Education Programs and Services Policy

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The following is provided as a follow up to discussions at the Board meeting on 13 September 2011.

Two focus group discussions are being scheduled on October 19, 2011 to seek public input: one from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the other from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The sessions will be held in the cafeteria of the Confederation Education Centre, 1645 Woodroffe Avenue, in Nepean.

The purpose of this consultation is twofold: to request input regarding possible changes to Policy P.096.SES Special Education Programs and Services and to request input on other issues affecting the delivery of special education programs and services.

Organization and Homework Club

We are pleased to be able to offer a program in Organization and Homework Help at Greenbank Middle School. This initiative is supported by the OCDSB Continuing Education Division.

The program provides students with a supervised opportunity to complete, review, practice, and organize their work in order to help them achieve greater success at school as well as move them towards Provincial standards in Mathematics/Language Arts.

There is an overwhelming amount of information out there for parents. The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) is working to help parents cut through the clutter and learn about the key physical and mental health issues that impact their kids.

There will be six evening events rolled out over the 2011/2012 school year -- each covering both physical and mental health topics for a specific age group.

BE SAFE WHILE SKATING. WEAR A HELMET.

Head injuries are the number one cause of disability in kids. Often they occur when kids take part in sports or activities. Nine times out of ten head injuries will be less severe if a helmet is worn correctly.

This fall, a new helmet rule will be in place at all City of Ottawa indoor public skate sessions. Kids aged ten and less will need to wear a hockey helmet when skating. This rule is for new skaters as well. The goal is to lower the number of head injuries.

Here are some tips to choose a helmet:

• It has been tested for safety. It has a CSA sticker.

• It is not used.

• It is not too loose.

• It fits your head now.

Anxiety in Kids

Anxiety is when you don’t feel okay; you may feel afraid or worried. It is normal for kids to feel nervous when they are growing up, like when:

• It’s their first day of school.

• A test is coming up.

• They have to talk to lots of people.

• They go to crowded places.

Sometimes kids have feelings of worry that are too much for them to handle. You may also feel like you cannot help your child on your own.

If your child has feelings of anxiety that are:

• Strong.

• Last for a long time.

• Not right for their age.

• Not letting them handle common everyday activities.

These may be signs of a bigger problem. Anxiety disorder is the most common mental problem seen in kids and teens. Anxiety can be handled, but if left alone, it can go on into the adult years. If you think your child has an anxiety problem, there is help.

Greenbank staff welcome new students and their families as well as our returning Gators.

Our new staff members this year include; Ms. Karen Buck, and Ms Lindsay Bolger replacing Mme Todd and Mme Khemani on maternity leave, Mr Mark Hooper, returning to Greenbank from a central position, Ms Jessica Ferguson, Educational Assistant and Ms Charley Ainsworth, Office Assistant.

Thanks to Mr Pontone, Mr Wagenblass, Mr Micelli, Mr Littleton and Mr Partington, the school building is in great shape. Teachers have been working over the last few weeks to prepare their classrooms and their curriculum to be ready for students.

The first week of school at Greenbank is an Orientation week, when all students will learn about their new teachers, classmates and timetables and get to know Greenbank. Grade 7 and Grade 8 students will reminded of the routines and expectations of middle school. Parents can look forward to hearing from homeroom teachers about those routines and ways to communicate with all of your child’s teachers.

On Friday a BarbQ lunch of hamburgers, coleslaw and potato salad will be provided to all students and staff at no charge. The day will end with a school-wide spirit event.

Through the course of the year, Greenbank students will be learning about the contributions they can make as citizens, and raising awareness about issues that affect their world. In that spirit, during the bar-b-q, a donation jar will be available to accept contributions to global efforts to help the drought victims of eastern Africa. All donations will be sent to World Vision.

GMS Student sets Canadian Record!

Congratulations to Jackie H. who set 2 Canadian records at the Ontario Sport Stacking Championships last weekend in Oshawa. Jackie won both the 3-3-3 and 3-6-3 cycles fast enough to set two new Canadian records. She also placed 3rd in another challenge. Well done Jackie. We're proud of you!

The Boys Tier One and Two Soccer Teams will have 3 tryouts next Week. They will happen on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:45 to 4pm. You can only make the team if you are present at all 3 try-outs.
You must speak to Mr. Cino in advance if you have a serious conflict.

All field tryouts are tentative pending field conditions. The fields need to be fully dry prior to tryouts.

Girls Badminton Results

On Tuesday, May 3, the Greenbank Varsity Girls Badminton Team participated in the regional tournament. Only four Greenbank teams were entered this year due to Mini-enrichment conflicts. Here are some notable results from that event. The team of Greenbank 2 (Laura I and Skye V) beat Broadview 5, then beat Longfield Davidson Heights 4 before losing to Broadview 4. Greenbank's number 1 ranked team (Aswini G and Lisa T) beat D. Aubrie Moodie 4, Sir Winston Churchill 2, Sir Winston Churchill , and Fisher Park 2 to make it to the "A" finals or Gold Medal game before finally losing to J.H. Putman 1. They ended up winning the bronze medal. It should be noted that both Greenbank 1 and 2 are comprised of grade 7 students, everyone was very pleased and impressed with their play and look forward to next year with great anticipation. Congratulations to both Greenbank 1 teams (male and female) on successfully advancing to the board finals which will be held on Thursday, May 12 at Longfield Davidson Heights H.S. in Barrhaven. Well done, Greenbank. Thanks to Mr. Finch for his efforts and time spent coaching.

On Thursday, May 5 the Greenbank Varsity Boys Badminton Team participated in the annual Southwest Region tournament. We're pleased to announce that every Greenbank team won at least one game. Greenbank 2 (William Z and Ali S) beat Broadview5 and Longfield Davidson Heights 4, before losing to one of the best teams in the tournament, D. Roy Kennedy 1. Greenbank 3 (Tony H and Jeremy W) beat Pinecrest 6 and Broadview 7 before losing to a very powerful Cedraview 1 team. Greenbank 4 (Neil T and Tony J) had the unenviable task of facing Fisher Park 1 (the eventual gold medalists) in their opening match. In their second game they beat Sir Winston Churchill 6. Greenbank 5 (Frank D and Gabriel K) beat Carleton Heights 6 in their second match. Greenbank 6 (Khadar M and Kieran P) beat both D. Aubrie Moodie 3 and Broadview 7 before losing to Broadview 1. The team of Akash P and Richard T beat D. Aubrie Moodie 4, Longfield 6, Fisher Park 5, Sir Winston Churchill 1 and Longfield 1 to advance all the way to the gold medal game before finally losing to Fisher Park 1. They then beat Longfield Davidson Heights, again, 1 to take home the silver. Thanks to Mr. Finch for his time spent coaching.

GMS Wins Rolling Rampage on the Hill

On Apr. 14 the GMS Gators participated in the Rolling Rampage on the Hill event. This 4x540m running challenge was attended by two GMS teams. Both teams faired very well with one team taking the title. Congratulation to all participants; Akash, Jaime, Ayoub, Whitney, Josh, Laura, Haider and Hilary and thanks to Mr. Boucher for his coaching.

Mandatory Dental Screening Dates

Annie Sauvé, a registered dental hygienist from Ottawa Public Health will provide a visual dental screening using a tongue depressor and non-latex gloves on April 15 and April 18, 2011. Only children identified as having dental needs will bring home a notification form. Follow up school visits by the dental hygienist for individual children may be required.

This does not replace a dental examination from a dentist. All children should visit their dentist for regular dental checkup. This is offered to parents in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, Mandatory Health Programs under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
“Personal information recorded in the course of these assessments is collected under the authority of section 5 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.h.7,” and will be used for the purpose of dental assessment, treatment and oral hygiene instruction, and for statistical purposes.

GMS Girls win Tournament!

Greenbank students did very well at the Ottawa Regional Science Fair held at Carleton University on April 2.

Anna R of 7/8K won a Silver in the Earth & Environmental Sciences Division for her project ‘Compression, Laterally’. She also won a Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Award for outstanding project related to earth sciences.

Steven C of 8E won a Silver in the Physical & Mathematical Sciences Division for his project ‘Pendulum’.

Melysa T of 7/8K won a Silver in the Life Science Division for her project ‘Sourire S'il Vous Plaît!’

Asif I of 8I won a Bronze in the Engineering & Computing Sciences division for his project on sound, ‘Transmission, Réflexion, Absorption’.

Chloe W and Jenna M of 7/8K won the COM DEV Ltd. Award for outstanding or innovative project in the areas of aerospace, communication science or engineering for their project ‘La Pince Universelle Robotisée’. They also won an Honourable Mention in the Physical & Mathematical Science Division.

Punctuality Counts!

Over the past term, Greenbank staff have been very concerned about the increasing regularity of students late for school. According to the Education Act, it is a student’s duty to attend school punctually. In addition to interrupting their own learning, when students are late to class, the entire class is disrupted by their entry. Student safety is compromised when students are not where they are expected to be.
In order to reinforce the need for punctuality, Greenbank students with unexcused lates will have the number of minutes they are late for school in the morning added to their day on Fridays after school. Lates for appointments will be excused, but excuse notes must be received in the office at the time of entry.
We appreciate your support in ensuring that your child knows the importance of being on time for school every day.
